5 Tips to Simplify Early Motherhood

The first weeks of motherhood can bring a whirlwind of change and a whole lot of questions. As a board-certified pediatrician, here are five simple tips to help you feel more grounded and assured as you care for your newborn.

Tip #1: Don't Overthink "Normal"

Every baby has their own rhythm. Some feed every 2 hours, others every 3. Some sleep on a regular schedule early on, and others take time. Focus less on what's labeled "normal" and more on what's consistent for your baby. Your pediatrician can help you identify patterns specific to your baby.

Tip #2: Feed Your Baby, Not the Clock

In the first weeks, hunger cues tend to matter more than a rigid schedule. Rooting, sucking on hands, or even mild fussiness before overt crying are all signs it's time to feed. Responsive (or what's termed "on-demand") feeding helps build trust in meeting your baby's needs. During early visits, your pediatrician will help you learn your baby's specific feeding cues and clarify the best frequency of feedings to support nutrition and weight gain.

Tip #3: Back-to-Basics Skincare

Newborn skin is sensitive by nature - and less is more. Bathing every 3-4 days, using fragrance-free (hypoallergenic) products, and moisturizing with a gentle ointment can help keep a baby's skin both clean and calm.

Tip #4: Set Realistic Sleep Expectations

Newborns aren't expected to sleep through the night...yet. Short naps and frequent wakeups are common. Focus on safe sleep and the small wins, not perfection.

Tip #5: Trust Your Intuition

No one knows your baby like you do. If something feels off - or if something feels right - listen to that instinct, and I'd encourage you to communicate these senses to your pediatrician. Throughout my years in practice, I've repeatedly seen maternal instinct play a vital role in care of a child.
