How to Choose Your Pediatrician

Choosing a pediatrician is one of the first big decisions you'll make for your baby - and it's the start of a partnership that can last for years. See a preview of questions here, and click the link below for access to the full guide. It walks you through two steps: reflecting on what matters most to your family, and knowing what to ask when you interview a practice.

Part One: Self-Reflection Checklist

Before you start interviewing, get clear on your own preferences and values. Ask yourself:

  • What are my views on office vaccine policies? Do I prefer a strict schedule, or am I comfortable with an alternative or split schedule?
  • How important is education during visits? Do I want thorough explanations, and can I come prepared with a list of questions?
  • How quickly do I want our needs addressed? Do I value same-day sick visits, a triage line, or after-hours access?

Part Two: Questions for the Pediatrician Interview

When you meet a practice, consider asking:

  • Where did you go to medical school and residency? Are you board-certified, and how long have you practiced?
  • What are your office hours and scheduling process? How do you handle urgent, same-day, and after-hours care? Is there a nurse line?
  • How would you describe your philosophy of care?

Remember: the partnership between your family and pediatrician has the potential to support you for years to come, and the best fit blends information and intuition. Often, your instincts will tell you when a practice feels right for your family.
